Our safety experts have a very high level of experience and expertise. By involving us early in the process we can help define the appropriate scope of testing, which often reduces the time and cost of testing and ultimately also the time-to-market timeline for product developments.
Awareness for industrial safety from fires and explosions and the requirements for equipment suitability at all levels means that equipment needs functional testing and approval/certification. Both equipment manufacturers and equipment users are governed by the ATEX directives in Europe.
Hazardous Area Classification is obligatory for companies that handle flammable and dangerous substances. This, in turn, dictates the type of equipment that must be used for a given situation or area. When the use of a piece of equipment is defined, documentation must be in place to show that the equipment is safe for its intended use.
The stricter the Ex-zone in which the equipment is to be used, the higher the level of safety and number of ignition barriers are necessary for approval.
ATEX Approval and Certification
In Gexcon Laboratories, we perform much of the testing required for various types of equipment. We work with notifying bodies and can assist in the ignition hazard analysis and conformity evaluation that is necessary before ATEX approval and certification.
The ATEX directives with associated European Standards and the NORSOK standards are often reference documents for our testing, although we perform a significant amount of tailor-made testing and research testing at our facilities outside Bergen, Norway.
Much of the testing carried out by Gexcon Laboratories involves:
- Testing equipment for use in potentially explosive atmospheres such as: Mechanical equipment used for maintaining offshore facilities e.g blasting equipment, rotating brushes, rotating files and grinding tools; transporting systems for use in explosive dust-laden atmospheres, and diesel engines and aggregates.
- Testing of protective systems including passive fire protection, venting devices and suppression systems.
