Harzardous Area Classification
This is a method where areas inside and possibly surrounding equipment containing flammable dust are classified according to the likelihood of occurrence of explosible dust/air mixtures. A hazardous area classification concerns normal operations conditions only.
A hazardous area classification is especially necessary to allow for the selection of appropriate equipment (both electric and non-electric (mechanical)) for use in such areas.
Area classification principles:
- Identifying material characteristics
- Identifying dust containment and sources of release
- Determine the likelihood of the occurrence of presence of explosive atmospheres and their extent
Zones for dust:
Zone 20: A place or area in which an explosive atmosphere, in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air, is present continuously, or for long periods or frequently.
Zone 21: A place or area in which an explosive atmosphere, in the form of a cloud of combustible dust is in air, is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.
Zone 22: A place or area in which an explosive atmosphere, in the form of a cloud of combustible dust is in air, is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.
