Harzardous Area Classification

This is a method where the plant or installation is classified in accordance to the likelihood of occurrence of an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist. This is done in order to allow selection of appropriate equipment for use in such areas.

Zones for gas, vapour or mist:

Zone 0: A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist is present continously or for long periods or frequently.

Zone 1: A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.

Zone 2: A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist is not likely to occur during normal operation but, if it dows occur, will persist for a short period only.
