Explosion protection document
The ATEX-Directive 1999/92/EC sets minimum requirements with focus on health and safety for personnel working in areas with potential explosion hazards. The ATEX Directive has been transposed to national law in all member countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area. One of the requirements set in the Directive and the national laws is the preparation of an explosion protection document by employers of personnel exposed to potential explosion hazards.
The explosion protection document shall demonstrate in particular:
- that the explosion risks have been determined and assessed,
- that adequate measures will be taken to attain the aims of the Directive,
- those places which have been classified into zones,
- those places where the minimum requirements will apply,
- that the workplace and work equipment, including warning devices, are designed, operated and maintained with due regard for safety,
- that arrangements have been made for the safe use of work equipment.

The explosion protection document shall be drawn up prior to the commencement of work and be revised when the workplace, work equipment or organisation of the work undergoes significant changes, extensions or conversions.
