Layout optimising
Gas cloud formation as well as explosion overpressures which might occur in an area depend on the confinement, equipment type/density, piping and structural layout of the area. Hence, during an explosion analysis, it makes sense to investigate also what effect on overpressures can be achieved by modifying layout. In particular this may be very cost-effective in the early phase of a project, when layout has not yet been fixed. Other mitigation measures can also be assessed.
Typically one would try to:
- Identify possible mitigation measures (e.g. effect of grating, general area deluge, hatch configurations, wall modifications etc)
- Perform selected explosion simulations to assess and rank the effect of the proposed mitigation measures
The optimization process may be based on a worst case explosion analysis, but can easily be extended to a probabilistic study resulting in comparable probability of exceedance curves.
