Our Research Engineer, Melodia Lucas, was presenting a paper titled “Simulating Vented Hydrogen Deflagrations: Improved Modelling in the CFD Tool FLACS-Hydrogen” at the 8th International Conference on Hydrogen Safety (ICHS 2019). This conference was held on 24-26 September in Adelaide, Australia. The attendees consist of hydrogen safety experts from all over the world. They were gathering to discuss various issues related to hydrogens, such as basic research, applied development, best practice, standardization and regulatory issues, and many more.
In her presentation, Melodia showed FLACS (FLame ACceleration Software) simulation results for experiments involving realistic hydrogen releases and vented deflagrations in 20-foot shipping containers. She mentioned that as part of the HySEA project, one of the purposes of this experiment is to further improve the accuracy of the combustion model for hydrogen deflagrations on FLACS. She also stated that one of the motivations to engage in this project for Gexcon is to support in facilitating safety in hydrogen energy applications by providing a comprehensive risk assessment tool which capability has been proven through extensive validations.
After the presentation, Melodia got remarkable responses from the audience that led to valuable discussions.
“It was a great pleasure for me to attend the ICHS conference and to share our work with many other researchers and industry representatives with an interest in hydrogen safety. The insights I have learned will help the R&D team to further develop the models in FLACS-Hydrogen and to maintain it as a useful tool for the hydrogen technology industry”, said Melodia.
