Gexcon’s Software R&D Department

We have seen a steady growth and are looking for a (senior) research engineer to strengthen our R&D team and further help develop and improve our FLACS-CFD solver. The role will include working directly on the CFD solver, the sub-models and related research work. In addition, you will work closely with the validation team to ensure that the models are robust and accurate and with the application development team developing the pre-/post- processors. You will work in our team using Agile methodologies and produce clean and well-tested code. The position will be based at our main office in Bergen, Norway.

The FLACS-CFD is the world leading software for advanced 3D safety consequence modelling (ventilation, dispersion, fires, and explosions) and is used in many industries including oil & gas, process, nuclear and increasingly renewables (especially for hydrogen safety). The software has been developed for large scale industrial applications, where getting results within an acceptable time frame (typically hours or a few days) is just as important as getting accurate and robust results.

As a (senior) research engineer, you will be part of a Scrum team and work closely with the product owner on our FLACS CFD solver and on supporting research topics. You will report to the senior manager software. You will have the following main tasks:

  • CFD solver development in FORTRAN, improving existing mathematical models and adding new sub-models related to turbulence, combustion, source-terms etc..
  • Supporting research, such as literature studies and prototyping new models
  • Validation of simulation results against experimental data, supported by the validation team
  • Close collaboration within the R&D team and with the application development team (both located in Norway)
  • Communication of results in the form of reports, publications and presentations
  • Contributing to the technical documentation and third level technical support
  • Following agile working methodology

  • Master’s or PhD degree in engineering, physics, mathematics or similar with good academic results
  • 2 or more years work experience in a similar role (but talented candidates with less experience will also be considered)
  • Proficient developing mathematical models and algorithms using scientific programming techniques in FORTRAN, C, C++ or similar
  • Experience with gas- or multiphase- dispersion, combustion, gas explosion and/or structural modelling is an advantage.
  • Experience with numerical modelling of fluid flow and use of CFD models is an advantage
  • Experience with advanced statistics is an advantage
