Gexcon is pleased to announce that we will be joining this year’s AIChE Spring Meeting and 16th GCPS. You can meet us at booth 110 and we will gladly discuss with you your concerns in regards to process safety. You will also have the opportunity to see the presentations from three of our experts.

Kees van Wingerden

Chief Technical Officer of Gexcon AS

Presentation Title

On the Occurrence of Flame Instabilities during Dust Explosions

Session

Combustible Dust Hazards and Their Mitigation

Location

George R. Brown Convention Center, Room 370

Date

Monday, Aug 17, 11:00 AM

Duration

30 minutes

Summary

Flame instabilities are well-known phenomena during gas explosions. However, they are often not considered to play an important role during dust explosion due to the turbulence intrinsically being present to be able to keep the dust in suspension and the dust itself damping potential acoustic standing waves. In his presentation, Kees will explain how flame instabilities are affecting the course of dust explosions based on two series of experiments.

Managing Risk Consultant of Gexcon US

Presentation Title

Leveraging CFD to Effectively Evaluate Sensitivity to Ignition Location When Designing for Explosion Loads

Session

Facility Siting, Consequence Analysis, and Risk Assessment I

Location

George R. Brown Convention Center, Room 370

Date

Tuesday, Aug 18, 2:30 PM

Duration

30 minutes

Summary

Due to the fact that vapor cloud explosions are among the most dangerous high consequence events that can occur in the petrochemical sector, the design of the petrochemical facilities must consider the potential adverse effects associated with vapor cloud explosions in large congested areas. When evaluating facility siting, among the factors that are generally not well studied is the sensitivity to ignition location. In his presentation, Drew will explain via case studies the importance of evaluating sensitivity to ignition location in more detail. He will also demonstrate a novel technique that can be used to visualize the sensitivity of specific targets to ignition location—thus making it easier to communicate results and identify areas of concern.

Presentation Title

Have We Learned Our Lessons: Revisiting the 2004 Skikda Explosion 16 Years Later

Session

Case Histories – GCPS Joint Session

Location

Hilton Americas-Houston, Ballroom of the Americas BCEF (2nd Floor)

Date

Wednesday, Aug 19, 4:30 PM

Duration

30 minutes

Summary

On January 19, 2004, at approximately 6:40 PM, a massive explosion and ensuing occurred at a liquefied natural gas (LNG) train in Skikda, Algeria. In his presentation, Scott will first present the cascading effects which led to the cause and origin of the catastrophic explosion event. Followed by discussing key lessons learned on how such an event could have been avoided by the use of necessary mitigation measures that could have been applied.
