Hydrogen Safety Studies

Due to its flammability, buoyancy, its ability to embrittle metals and other properties that require engineering control, designing a hydrogen system that ensures its safe use can be a challenging process. Awareness of hydrogen hazards is critical so that early precautions can be taken, such as designing a reliable hydrogen system.  Precautions apply not only for hydrogen-powered vehicles and vessels but also for hydrogen processing plants or transportation.

Our consultants have been involved in many hydrogen safety-related projects, including hydrogen plants, filling stations, transportation, nuclear energy industry and hydrogen in maritime applications. With our knowledge and expertise in this area, we can assist our customers in the design process, obtaining approvals and managing risks. We also have experience in forensic examination of hydrogen-related accidents and the accumulated knowledge is brought to bear on the advice we provide to our customers.

Gexcon will ensure that the risks from hydrogen are evaluated thoroughly and systematically and that the level of risk will be identified based on the level of severity. We will also provide you with practical recommendations for your safety performance improvement.

Excellent safety tools support our consultants to provide you with the best results. One of those safety tools is FLACS-CFD, our very own developed 3D Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) software. In developing FLACS-CFD, the research and development team at Gexcon is very active within the global research community on hydrogen safety, with a particular emphasis on CFD modelling of gaseous and liquid releases, jet fires and deflagrations. They have also been involved in the development of a methodology for Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) for hydrogen applications.

  • Hydrogen dispersion and determination of siting and safe distances under the SEVESO directive
  • Dimensioning of explosion pressure relief devices in rooms containing hydrogen storage and equipment
  • Process safety reviews to prevent internal explosions in hydrogen carrying systems
  • Safety studies and design support for class approval of hydrogen-powered marine vessels
  • Risk analysis and area classification of hydrogen electrolysis plants

The cost of our consulting service depends on many factors, such as the scope of studies. Please let us know your preference by completing the enquiry form below.
