Hydrogen safety studies - Gexcon's consulting solution

Hydrogen safety studies

We help our clients develop a safe and regulatory-compliant hydrogen industry towards a carbon-free future

Due to its flammability, buoyancy, its ability to embrittle metals and other properties that require engineering control, designing a hydrogen system that ensures its safe use can be a challenging process. Awareness of hydrogen hazards is critical so that early precautions can be taken, such as designing a reliable hydrogen system.  Precautions apply not only for hydrogen-powered vehicles and vessels but also for hydrogen processing plants or transportation.

Gexcon Consulting offers a full spectrum of safety studies for the hydrogen industry. Our consultants have experience working with facilities across all hydrogen supply chains and from all parts of the facility life cycle.

Our experience includes a wide range of industries and compressed as well as liquefied hydrogen. Our consulting team consists of expert users of Gexcon’s software products and can give advice on what tools that are appropriate for your safety study.

One of those safety tools is FLACS-CFD, our very own developed 3D Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) software. In developing FLACS-CFD, the research and development team at Gexcon is very active within the global research community on hydrogen safety, with a particular emphasis on CFD modelling of gaseous and liquid releases, jet fires, and deflagrations. They have also been involved in the development of a methodology for Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) for hydrogen applications.

Hydrogen safety study key services

  • Early-stage risk analysis to identify potential hazards
  • Full facility risk analysis to map risk exposure on site and off site
  • Verification of safety studies to ensure compliance with relevant standards and regulations
  • Detailed modelling of hydrogen release and explosion consequences
  • Quantitative risk analysis for siting and licensing purposes
  • Verify structural response

Gexcon will ensure that the risks from hydrogen are evaluated thoroughly and systematically and that the level of risk will be identified based on the level of severity. We will also provide you with practical recommendations for your safety performance improvement.

Hydrogen safety study examples

  • Hydrogen dispersion and determination of siting and safe distances under the SEVESO directive
  • Dimensioning of explosion pressure relief devices in rooms containing hydrogen storage and equipment
  • Process safety reviews to prevent internal explosions in hydrogen carrying systems
  • Safety studies and design support for class approval of hydrogen-powered marine vessels
  • Risk analysis and area classification of hydrogen electrolysis plants
