Testing for Obtaining Transportation Classification

Testing for Obtaining Transportation Classification

During the transportation of certain materials, several hazardous situations can occur. One of them is gas development due to the fact that transported goods may come into contact with water. The gas developed in most cases is hydrogen, which is highly explosive when mixed with air. Toxic gases may also develop. Therefore, a test method has been developed and described in ‘United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Test and Criteria Part III – 33.4.1.4’ (Test No. 5: Test method for substances that emit flammable gases in contact with water). This test is also described in the REACH directive. Gexcon has developed a test setup and can perform tests on materials according to these documents.

Gexcon also performs the Class 4 Division 4.1 – Flammable Solids Test which is often referred to as the “UN 4.1 – Burn Rate Test”.  This test was designed to distinguish between materials that will barely ignite when an ignition source is present and those that will burn very rapidly.
