Quantitative Risk Analysis

While Consequence Analysis calculates the physical effects of a single accident with a dangerous substance, a Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) takes multiple accident scenarios and many different pieces of equipment into account and quantifies the total risk they pose to human life and vital assets.

Calculated risks are expressed in terms of individual, societal and consequence risk. The latter allows the definition of any type of risk to both human health and structures.

RISKCURVES will present calculation results in a range of ways, including individual risk contours, FN curves, and risk ranking reports. You can use ‘analysis points’ to analyze the risk contribution of scenarios in specific locations.

Societal Risk Maps

ONE of RISKCURVES’ unique functionalities is the ‘societal risk map’: a geographical representation of societal risk. This provides insight at a glance, even for non-specialists. They add the possibility to locate the area(s) that cause societal risk parameters to be exceeded and to identify the areas that contribute most to risk.

Although it was designed to fully integrate with EFFECTS Consequence Analysis software, RISKCURVES supports an open, flexible QRA environment that allows you to input consequence results calculated by other software. Use RISKCURVES’ database of more than 2200 chemical components based on the latest DIPPR® data, or define customized chemicals and compounds specific to your organization.

Even if you only use RISKCURVES occasionally, you’ll find it easy to input and analyze data to create QRA assessments. Upload your own maps and aerial photography, or access links to online satellite imagery. The software is fully compatible with standard office programs and GIS software, so you can easily create professional reports and presentations.

Transparent and traceable

The “Coloured Books” are used around the world as valuable standard reference material in safety studies. They were used as the basis for the software programs EFFECTS and RISKCURVES and still are the reference for most of the models in this software. The studies were initiated by the Dutch Government in the 1990s.

As an independent research organization, TNO applies transparent and traceable methods for risk analysis. RISKCURVES is based on the principles and standards presented in the Coloured Books
