Gexcon is pleased to announce that we will be presenting, sponsoring and exhibiting at this year’s World Hydrogen Summit 2023.

The event which takes place on May 09 -11 at the Rotterdam Ahoy, Netherlands will see industry experts and policymakers come together to collaborate, knowledge share, and discuss industry insights and innovation across the hydrogen economy value chain.

Gexcon UK Energy Transition Lead, Dr Karina Almeida Leñero will deliver a presentation during the H2 Tech Series, whilst Senior Engineer Lars-Marthin Knoph will participate in a panel discussion.

Aviation accounts for about 3% of global carbon emissions annually, therefore there is a strong incentive to decarbonise the aviation industry.

Several options are currently being pursued: Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), hydrogen fuel-cell electric planes and planes using hydrogen gas turbines. For long haul flights, the hydrogen turbine propulsion system is considered the most promising option, with hydrogen being stored as a liquid to carry the amount of fuel required.  

The use of liquid hydrogen (LH2) in aviation presents several safety challenges, from the materials used through aircraft refuelling procedures to the storage of large amounts of LH2 at or near the airport. 

Gexcon has studied the consequences of a potential release of liquid hydrogen while refuelling an aircraft. We will show how advanced modelling using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can be used to understand the hazards from potential LH2 releases by simulating accidental spills and their subsequent consequences (gas dispersion, fire, explosion).The objective is to provide reasonable estimates for the size of potential flammable clouds, hazard distances for thermal radiation and explosion overpressure if a release was ignited, as well as to explore on how the layout and geometry around the release can influence these hazards. The results can then be used to answer questions and provide guidance to issues like the layout of hydrogen refuelling “hubs” at airports, exclusion zones while refuelling aircraft, procedures for refuelling, and appropriate emergency response in case of an accidental release of hydrogen.
